The themes of nature and climate change with the location and timing of the mural created a central theme of Poornet season, celebrating the foundational stages of growth and life in a vibrant and buzzing scene. The artwork is filled with Growling Grass Frog Life Cycle drawings from the Moomba Park Primary students, recognising the important conservation project at Moomba Park Wetlands. The mural also features native plants and other endangered animal families from Merri-bek including the Tussock Skink, Speckled Duck, Golden Sun Moth and the Helmeted Honey Eater. Tying the theme together is the title “A World That Grows With Us” taken from a conversation with a new parent at the centre, discussing what she hoped for her 4 month old daughter. The parents spent some time in nature discussing concerns and hopes, and creating sustainable prints of the surrounding native plants using home-made play-doh. These prints and patterns also feature in the artwork. Ideas and drawings from the students about “what we can do to help nature” are also incorporated into the scene, demonstrating a world informed by young minds and Indigenous knowledges where we care for, nurture and protect a world that grows with us.
