I was commissioned by City of Melbourne to illustrate signage and planter box wraps for a pilot project, Remix Raingardens. The brief specified engaging, attention attracting and enjoyable to read diagrams and illustration which communicate what a raingarden is, how it works and why it’s important. As well as the waste used in the gardens; construction sand, glass sand, food organics, street sweepings. As there were three rain gardens I created an illustrated scene of Naarm / Birrarung-ga as drainage currently existed, highlighting the issues with flooding. And then another of the same scene, but with rain gardens and a healthier management of rainwater, with the Birrarung (Yarra River) healthy and thriving. The third box was a cross section diagram showing the make-up of the garden including native flora and fauna and the layers of waste.
The pilot was developed in partnership with the Victorian Government, Fishermans Bend, Development Victoria and University of Melbourne Opportunity Lab, and won the of the 2022 Fishermans Bend Innovation Challenge. Building on the success of this pilot it was expanded in 2025 through Port Melbourne on public and private land.
