As part of the City of Darebin’s Safe Routes to School Program, I had the privilege of co-designing “Leg’s and Friends” to beautify Leg’s Lane, alongside students from Reservoir Primary and a young artist from NCAT, whom I mentored throughout the entire process.
Through drawing and brainstorming workshops the students shared what safety means to them, their favourite places in Reservoir, and their sense of responsibility to each other, the community, and Wurundjeri Country. Together, we imagined a cast of safety mascots, the students’ original drawings then became the foundation of the mural, and we all painted it together giving the student’s collective ownership and pride in seeing their voice and vision every day on the way to school.
